Alpha-barium borate (α-BBO) is a negative uniaxial crystal with high birefringence and high transmittance over a wide transparency range of 189 nm to 3500 nm. Its physical, chemical, thermal and optical properties are similar to those of β-BBO. It performs better than synthetic crystals such as YVO₄ in the ultraviolet band, but requires anti-reflection coating and moisture protection.
